Rafting FAQS

Absolutely! Our expert guides will have you trained up before we even push off!

May-June is High water! This is the most exciting time to book an Elk Canyon trip if its in runnable flow, and your opportunity to get on the scenic Bull River before it gets too low!

You will almost certainly get wet. It is possible to keep some things dry on our float trip, but we still recommend dressing to get wet!

We have an alternate meeting point at the Hwy 3/93 Junction so you don’t have to drive all the way to Fernie and back! Mention this in your booking and we will arrange your gear and pick you up!

All of our guests wear an approved PFD or “Lifejacket” that will float you should you fall out of the boat. You’ll also receive instructions from our guides before pushing off on how to react and self rescue if you find yourself outside the raft!

Your most challenging part of the day is the hike down the canyon to our put in. It is 500 vertical feet in just under a kilometre. There is a staircase installed for much of the trail to make the descent easier, but bringing your own weathered hiking shoes or sneakers that you don’t mind getting wet in the river will make it even easier! If you think you handle a short hike to the canyon floor at the start of the day, you will have no trouble on your experience!

For a full day adventure, swimwear, sunscreen, water bottle that can be clipped into the raft, sunglasses (preferably with a keeper strap), towel, and a change of clothes (and shoes) for the end of the trip. Feel free to bring snacks for the bus ride to and from the river, but your on river food will be provided! For a chillier day in the spring or fall, bring an extra fuzzy jacket for the end of day when you get your wetsuit off!

We don’t recommend bringing any electronics, especially ones you don’t want to lose in the river! This applies to jewelry/watches as well.

Our guides love to know that they did a great job out there, and will appreciate a gratuity after your trip!

Tunnel49 is proud to hold permits for the Kootenay river and its tributaries since 1995! We are licensed through the BC Raft Outfitters Association which helps us access and protect these beautiful areas that may otherwise be inaccessible to most members of the public!

Youth rate ranges up to 16 years old.

Travel FAQS

If you notify the staff with enough time and a driver has not yet left we are able to reschedule your pick-up from another day (YYC) or later time (YXC).

It is recommended that you get travellers insurance to cover the cost of cancelled flights that result in missed shuttles. We will do our best to reschedule. However, if a driver is sent out and we aren’t notified in time this will result in a loss of funds.

Baggage allowance per passenger: Two checked-on-sized bags and 1 carry-on. Any further baggage will incur a cost of $20. Skis and snowboards must be in ski/snowboard bags.

Cancellations can be received at any time. If cancelled 72 hours or more from the scheduled pick-up time a $50 + GST administrative fee will apply. Cancellations received within 72 hours are non-refundable.

Speak with one of our staff if you need more information on how long it takes to get to the airports. We always suggest giving yourself more time.

Our drivers undergo multiple tests through the BC insurance program ICBC. Once they hold the valid class licence they do training days with our company before they are able to drive alone with passengers.

Weather and road conditions are a big factor in a Canadian Winter. We will do our best to get everyone to their destination safely. Allow for extra travel time and have cancellation or trip insurance. Tunnel49 is not responsible for any missed flights due to road conditions.

We run the Calgary and Cranbrook shuttles daily, as long as there are 3 or more people in each shuttle. If you are the only 1 or 2 people travelling, we can offer the taxi services.

  • For Calgary connections we depart Fernie at 8 AM (MST) and leave Calgary back to Fernie at 1 PM.
  • For Cranbrook connections we are more flexible with times as it is only an hour’s drive from Fernie. We offer morning, afternoon and evening rides.
  • Pincher Creek, Lethbridge, and Kalispell operate on an as-needed basis.

Please email info@t49.ca or call 250 423 50008 and one of our trusted advisors will assist you.

You will be charged in Canadian dollars unless there has been a previous conversation.

There are no washrooms. If you need to urgently stop please speak with your driver and they will pull over at the next available location.

We currently have the flexibility to be picking up and dropping off at any location within Fernie city limits. However, this is subject to change in accordance with how busy the service is. (We will update this section when that happens).

No, sorry, we don’t allow pets in Tunnel49 vehicles.

A waiver is a legal document where one party voluntarily gives up certain rights or claims against another party. The person signing the waiver acknowledges the risks involved and agrees not to hold the other party responsible for any injuries or damages. Tunnel49 waivers also entail the release of the photos and videos of the whitewater trip. They also need to be fully understood and signed before going on your adventure.
